The Doctor (Robert Picardo) is an Emergency Medical Hologram or EMH. The Doctor is the chief medical officer on the starship U.S.S. Voyager under the command of Captain Kathyrn Janeway.

“What I didn’t realize, because I wasn’t familiar with Star Trek at the time was that the artificial intelligence characters kind of replaced Spock as the outsider character who is not human but aspires to be human. In the same sense that Data became a breakout character on Star Trek TNG I think the Doctor captured the audience’s imagination and the writers responded by giving me (The Doctor) wonderful things to do.”
