In the episode Imperfection, from the seventh season of Star Trek Voyager, Seven of Nine requires life saving brain surgery to replace a malfunctioning cortical node. The Doctor practices the procedure in a Holodeck surgery simulation but all twelve attempts result in failure.
Can present day surgeons also perform virtual brain surgery before attempting the actual procedure?
Yes they can, thanks to technology from Canada’s National Research Council. Neurosurgeons from Halifax used virtual reality technology to rehearse brain surgery the day before removing a brain tumor from an actual patient.
